About the multiplication tables check
- Year 4 pupils in England take it in June, on a computer or tablet at school.
- There are 25 questions from the 2 to 12 times tables, such as 7 × 8 or 12 × 6. Either number can come first.
- Each question gives 6 seconds to type the answer, then there's a 3-second pause before the next one.
- There's no pass mark. It helps schools see who needs more help with times tables.
This practice uses the same format, but it isn't the official check and isn't linked to the Department for Education.
How to get ready
- Most questions here come from the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables, which children find hardest.
- Practise typing answers quickly. 6 seconds is enough to type 144 if the fact comes straight away, but not enough to work it out.
- Learn each fact both ways round: if you know 3 × 8 = 24, you know 8 × 3 = 24 too.
- Between runs, play a 60-second speed round on one table, or an untimed practice game on the facts you missed.
